Bill Belichick is Coach of the Year

Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots was voted AP’s “coach of the year.” This is the third time that Belichick is given the award, as he already got the top honor in 2003 and 2007. This season, Belichick led the Patriots to only 2 losses and a total of 14 wins, the most in the NFL, according to ESPN.

During an interview with the NFL Network, Belichick said, “Ownership, our assistant coaches and certainly the players, they’re the ones that stepped up and made the plays this year. We had a lot of new people on the team, young players that contributed. It’s certainly an honor to receive this award on behalf of our performance in the regular season. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to carry that over into the playoffs,” Belichick said, accepting the award for the entire Patriots organization and relayed by the Boston Herald.

The 58-year-old coach got the most votes of all the coaches, tallying up 30 out of 50 media members who regularly cover the NFL. The second one to get the most votes was Raheem Morris of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with 11 votes according to Sky Sports.

Belichick led the Patriots to a 14-2 record even though he had the youngest defense in the NFL.  Belichick is the only coach to ever lead his team to at least 14 wins in four separate seasons. Only four other coaches have ever had more than one season with 14 victories, according to the Boston Herald. With this award, Belichick now trails Miami Dolphins’ Don Shula who got the award a total of four times. The Ex-Steelers Coach Chuck Noll also won “coach of the year” three times.
