Tron: Legacy Tops Box Office For Opening Weekend Despite Mixed Reviews

Disney’s Tron: Legacy certainly did not suffer from the recent mixed reviews that circulated from critics, and had a show stopping opening weekend, bringing in more than $43 million and coming in as #1.  Fans seemed to disregard any negative feedback from movie critics, and flooded to theaters for a taste of Tron 3D, in all its glory.  The opening weekend revenue for Tron was more than both top box office movies combined from the previous weekend.

The last Tron movie was aired back in 1982, and ignited a cult following that has been anxiously awaiting this newest installment of the Tron franchise.  As well as the fan base from the 80’s, Tron now has a brand new set of newer generation fans who have been introduced to the thrilling Tron adventure through Disney’s powerful Tron marketing campaign, as well as through their highly successful Tron: Evolution Video Game that set the stage for the recent release of the movie.  The highly rated game is available for the PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PSP, and DS.

There have been a multitude of Tron Toys & Games released to celebrate the Tron digital grid, including action figures, light cycles, costumes, games, identity discs, and even a Tron iPod Identity Disc Dock for the ultimate Tron gadget.   Tron: Legacy seems to be on the fast track to success, and based on the public’s response to the movie and the popular Tron merchandise, Disney’s movie can be classified as a virtual overnight sensation.
