Taylor Swift Wins Big Country Music Awards

Taylor Swift and Miranda Lambert were the big winners at the Academy of Country Music Award held yesterday in Last Vegas, NV.

Taylor Swift, 21, won the entertainer of the year award. Her album “Speak Now” sold over a million copies in its first week of release. “This is the first time that I’ve ever won this, and I’m just losing my mind,” Swift said upon acceptance. “The fact that this is from the fans makes it so special,” she added according to BBC News. Presenter Ryan Seacrest said that the award received the most votes in that category. She also performed her new single ‘Mean’ during the ceremony according to USA Today.

Miranda Lambert took home the most prizes with three major awards. She won song of the year for ‘The House that Built Me,’ the award for single record and female vocalist of the year, reports the Wall Street Journal.

Lady Antebellum won the award for album of the year for “Need You Now,” and best vocalist group. “Thank you, Miranda Lambert, for winning this last year and not being in the category this year!” The group’s Charles Kelley said jokingly when accepting the award.

Brad Paisley won top male vocalist for the fifth straight year and said when accepting his prize, “this is way too many.” Sugarland won vocal duo of the year for the second straight year, and the Band Perry was handed the best new artist award, reports E! Online.

While the show was about country music, the academy brought in performers from other categories; Rihanna, James Taylor and Aerosmith’s Steve Tyler all sang at the MGM Garden Arena-staged ceremony. There was a lot of singing throughout the night with performances outnumbering awards three to one, says USA Today. Performances included Sara Evans, Brad Paisley, Carrie Underwood, and Jennifer Nettles. Blake Shelton and Reba McEntire hosted the three-hour show on CBS.
