Butler UConn Advance to Finals in NCAA Tournament

The dream continues for Butler and UConn who beat their rivals Kentucky and VCU on Saturday in the Final Four faceoff. They will be playing each other for the ultimate championship title on Monday night.

UConn toppled Kentucky on Saturday with a razor thin win of 56-55, with star player Kemba Walker marking 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists, extending the young team’s five-game winning streak, says ESPN. “The guys decided they didn’t want to go home; this is too much fun,” UConn coach Jim Calhoun said.

On the Kentucky Wildcats’ side, Coach Calipari said of their loss, “We had our chance to win the game, and as a coach, that’s all you can ask of these young people,” Coach Calipari said. “Give us a chance, and we had an opportunity.” He also explained, “We held a pretty good team to 56 points,” he said, according to ESPN. “I hate to tell you, we talked about if we defend them this way, they’re going to score around 56 points, maybe 60. I just didn’t think we’d score 55.”

The Butler Bulldogs also pulled off a win against the Virginia Commonwealth Rams 72-60 to advance to the championship game for the second year in a row. “I don’t think I can possibly explain how much I want to do this,” said Butler forward Matt Howard, who has played more NCAA tournament games than anyone else, to ESPN. “The experience of being there, of being so close last year, I just can’t explain what this chance means to me.”

The game’s MVP Ronald Nored didn’t score any points during the game but was instrumental in the team’s significant win. Hours before the game started, he told Butler’s top scorer Shelvin Mack that he heard that VCU was criticizing him and saying that he wasn’t as good as other players the NCAA. Even if it wasn’t true, Nored took a chance that this would motivate Mack to play better than ever, and it worked. Mack scored 24 points including ten in arrow, reports ESPN.

“Yeah, he totally made it up, but Ron’s a good leader, so he does stuff like that all the time,” said Mack. “I knew it wasn’t true, but I don’t know, I guess it motivated me anyway.”
