Schilling Reveals World Premiere of ‘Reckoning’ Video Game

Former Red Sox pitcher, Curt Schilling, unveiled the trailer of his studio’s first video game Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning yesterday at Boston’s PAX East 2011.

The game which is being developed by Schilling’s Studio 38 and Big Huge Games is due to be released in 2012. Schilling told the audience at the convention, “This game has already surpassed anything I envisioned for it,” Schilling said. “This game is going to kick (butt).” He also talked about his video game beginnings. Schilling reportedly invested $30 million of his own money to create the company in 2006, says the Boston Herald.

“How many people here are stupid enough to invest everything they had in a game company?” As the crowd laughed, he added, “My wife is not laughing…But the truth is I wouldn’t trade what I’m doing now for anything in the world,” he said.

The video game was received well by gamers who cheered loudly during scenes of the game and after the trailer premiere. Schilling said that the game’s premise was not very original, saying “We’re a fantasy RPG,’’ he said according to the Boston Globe. “That’s not really new.’’

However he added that Kingdoms of Amalur would deliver a superior playing experience. “We want to be the best in the world at what we do,’’ he said, “So you set the bar high and it stays that high forever.’’

The game itself will allow players to wander around different environments, and not be limited to a single path, and can look for up to 2 million pieces of “virtual loot” such as weapons and tools. The game’s main designer, Ian Frazier told the audience that the combat system would be simpler than other games, and players wouldn’t need to memorize complex commands, which led to cheering from the audience.

Many gamers said they were looking forward to the game, P.J Mahoney of Albany, N.Y said, “I’m definitely going to buy it…It may not break new ground, but it definitely moves the genre forward,” according to the Boston Globe.
