New ‘Batman: Arkham City’ Details Revealed

Rocksteady Studios and Warner Bros. unveiled details about the upcoming Batman: Arkham City, to be released during the third quarter of this year at the Game Developers’ Conference.

The single player game will feature the Dark Knight as he tries to restore security and order in Arkham City, reports USA Today. This highly anticipated sequel comes after the widely acclaimed Batman: Arkham Asylum came out in 2009, selling millions, amassing critical acclaim and winning a few awards including a Bafta for best video game, says the Daily Telegraph. The reason for this success was because Batman wasn’t just an avatar, but Rocksteady Studios offered players a multifaceted experience of brutal fighting, weapons, gadgets and puzzles but most importantly, exposed Batman’s vulnerabilities and dove into the mind of the man behind the mask.

MTV states that in this game there is so much going on and players can easily be sidelined by missions to find Riddler and stop him from ruining the city. The game map for this sequel is five times bigger than the original. Screenshots from Batman: Arkham City show villains such as Two-Face, Harley Quinn and Joker. When asked by IGN if there were too many villains in the game, game director Sefton Hill replied,

“It was never about making a bigger game for us – just a better one. If we thought the best game featured just one villain then that’s we’d do. Rest assured, we aren’t putting villains into the game just to make up the numbers, we are choosing characters who we think have an interesting story to tell and who can challenge Batman in an original and exciting way.”

He also said that character, Hugo Strange, would be an interesting addition to the game because he controls the Arkham asylum, and he’s the only one who knows Batman’s true identity. Is Hill afraid that the success of the first game could create too much expectation for the sequel?

“Batman: Arkham Asylum has given us a huge amount of confidence to try and take on technical and gameplay challenges we wouldn’t have dreamt of attempting beforehand…We are also aware of the levels of expectation, but you have to try not to let it affect you too much because if you stop and think about it, it really is bloody terrifying,” he added in the interview to IGN.
