Activision Announces ‘Spiderman: Edge of Time’

Activision and game developer Beenox officially unveiled the new Spiderman video game, Spiderman: Edge of Time, which follows up last year’s Spiderman: Shattered Dimensions.

The new game was expected to be announced at this weekend’s WonderCon 2011 in San Francisco but Activision jumped the gun. The new Spiderman will have the wall-crawling superhero facing his biggest challenging yet; saving himself. While Shattered Dimensions covered four threads, Edge of Time will span two dimensions; Amazing Spiderman and Spiderman 2099 as he fights to “correct a timestream gone awry and prevent a catastrophic future brought on by the early and untimely death of Peter Parker,” according to an Activision statement relayed by USA Today.

For this new game, Beenox is working with Marvel Comics writer and co-creator of Spiderman 2099, Peter David, reports MTV News. David also worked on the Incredible Hulk Series.

“At Beenox, we are constantly listening to the fans and looking for new and creative ways to innovate the gameplay experience for them,” said Beenox’s Dee Brown said in the press release. “We want to create a totally distinct experience in ‘Spider-Man: Edge of Time’ by working with Peter David on the story and creating this urgent, high-stakes experience where time is working against you and the fate of Spider-Man hangs in the balance.”

The gameplay will have a “cause and effect” dimension to it where one Spiderman’s actions can have an impact on the other Spiderman’s timeline, states Gamespot. Players will have the task of saving Spiderman’s life to avoid that the world’s future takes an apocalyptic turn.

The new Spiderman: Edge of Time will be available this fall. Although no platforms were officially announced, the previous Shattered Dimensions Spiderman video game was released last year for the Xbox 360, the Nintendo Wii, DS, Playstation 3 and PC.
