Google Leading Smartphone Platforms

Google has become the number one smartphone platform in the country with 33 percent of market share in February, up from 26 percent in November 2010, according to the 2011 U.S. Mobile Subscriber Market Share report conducted by comScore.

Back in November, Research in Motion was leading the pack in smartphone platforms with 33.5 percent of the market share. In February, it went down to 28.9 percent, putting it in second place. Apple comes in third with a percentage of 25.2 percent, only slightly increasing from the 25 percent of the market share it had a few months ago, says comScore in a press release of the findings.

There is some good news for Apple, however. Verizon’s Apple iPhone was the top-selling smartphone in February, marking a 0.9 percent increase in subscribers between the end of November and the end of February. However, Apple still hasn’t been able to catch up to its competitors and only holds 7.5 percent market share in smartphone manufacturing placing it at the end of the list. The first manufacturer is Samsung which clutches on to 24 percent of the market, followed by LG with 20.9 percent, Motorola with 16.1 percent, and RIM with 8.6 percent.

The smartphone market continues to rapidly expand. Out of the 234 million Americans that own a mobile phone, 69.5 percent had a smartphone in the three months leading up to the end of February, marking a 13 percent growth during that time period.

In February, 68.8 percent of U.S mobile users used text messaging on their phone, while 38.4 percent used a Browser, and 36.6 percent downloaded an application. Gaming continues to be a favorite mobile phone activity with an estimated 26.8 percent of users, and 17.5 percent liked listening to music on their phone, adds comScore. Finally, 26.8 percent of users used social networking websites and accessed blogs, which marks a 3.3 percent increase between November and the end of February.
