Android Phone Faster at Loading Webpages than iPhone 4

The latest Android smartphone loaded webpages 52 percent faster than the iPhone 4 which uses iOS 4.3, according to Blaze, a mobile website optimization company.

After conducting 45,000 load tests of Fortune 1000 websites using Wi-Fi and 3G; it was found that the Android 2.3 device, a Samsung Nexus smartphone using Chrome loaded pages in 2.144 seconds, compared to the 3.254 seconds it took for the iPhone 4 using a Safari browser, reports Computerworld. The Android phone provided 84 percent faster loading speed than the iOS phone, and according to the study, “Android wasn’t just faster overall, but rather provided a faster browsing experience four times out of five.”

Blaze CTO and co-founder Guy Podjarny said in a statement, “We were very surprised by the results…We assumed that it would be closer race and that the latest JavaScript speed improvements would have a more material impact on performance. The fact that Android beat iPhone by such a large margin was not expected,” according to PCmag.

Apple blames the results on the fact that Blaze used an embedded Safari browser UIWebView, which doesn’t have the latest iOS 4.3 updates, “Their testing is flawed because they didn’t actually test the Safari web browser on the iPhone,” Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller said. “Instead they only tested their own proprietary app which uses an embedded web viewer that doesn’t take advantage of Safari’s web performance optimizations. Despite this fundamental testing flaw, they still only found an average of a second difference in loading web pages.”

In a statement to Cnet, Podjarny said that Blaze wasn’t aware that Apple didn’t apply the same updates to their embedded browsers. If it were to generalize the updates, Blaze was willing to conduct new tests, he added.
