Snow and Ice-Cold Weather Make a Mess of Super Bowl Weekend

Fresh snow and freezing temperatures have made the Dallas and Fort Worth area seem more like Pittsburg, as fans struggle with weather delays to get to Sunday’s Super Bowl. An overnight snowstorm, dubbed North Texas’s worst ice storm in 20 years, has brought a lot of snow and a lot of headaches for travelers and businesses alike.

The weather would stump the economic effect that businesses in Dallas were hoping to profit from, “Dallas is going to miss out on a lot of additional revenue I’m sure it was taking into account,” said sports business analyst, Robert Tuchman, according to the Dallas News.

“It’s one thing that it snows and we have the ice…but it’s another when it happens in this part of the country. We don’t handle it well. We don’t drive well. We don’t anticipate it well, and we just don’t get out on it. It just has a stifling effect on the entire Metroplex.” said Vance Martin, the owner of a restaurant in Fort Worth, according to The Washington Post.

Fans and travelers trying to make it to the Super Bowl were having a tough time, with flights being canceled and roads being blocked. The snowstorm caused sheets of ice to break off from the Cowboys Stadium, injuring 6 people who were mostly contractors, prepping the venue for an anticipated 100,000 fans coming to Sunday’s big game, according to the Kansas City Star.

Some of the fans who did make it to Dallas were rattled, “It looks like, ‘Oh, no, I’m back in Canada…It’s just pouring down snow. Are we still at home, or have we left? We didn’t drink that much last night, did we?” said Sammy Sandu from British Columbia, according to the Associated Press.

Earlier in the week, the weather forecast of sunny skies and 60 degree temperatures had given hope to the NFL that roads would thaw out and that things would go normally according to the Dallas News. This has apparently not panned out as the current weather is foggy and the National Weather Service forecast predicts more chance of rain or snow later on in the evening.

When asked if the weather would affect the choices for future Super Bowl venues, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said that this year the conditions had been exceptional, according to the Associated Press.
