Sony Ericsson Presents the Playstation Phone

Sony Ericsson is stepping its game so to speak. It has revealed the Xperia Play, a phone that also provides a Playstation Gaming experience at Barcelona’s Mobile World Congress, according to Bloomberg.

“This is the best smartphone ever and will open up new possibilities for entertainment,” said Rikko Sakaguchi, Vice President and “chief creation officer” at Sony Ericsson at the event, and relayed by PC World.

It will be the first time a major company has taken on the challenge of mixing together the Playstation Gaming console, PSP, with the features of a cell phone since Nokia’s ill-fated N-Gage came out in 2003, according to the Wall Street Journal.

“Xperia Play will be much better than Nokia’s old N-Gage…Since N-Gage was launched, technology has improved a lot and that will make gaming much more fun. For example, chipsets and graphics are much better now.” Bert Nordberg, Sony Ericsson Chief Executive, said to Dow Jones.

The gaming smartphone will be the first to meet the stringent standards of Sony’s new Playstation Certified Distinction that was set up to allow Android phones, and tablet computers to play older Playstation games, said the Wall Street Journal.

The Xperia Play is powered by Android, has a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, and a four inch touch screen.  It is a CDMA phone. According to BBC News, the Xperia Play will feature up to 50 Playstation games.

With this innovation, Sony Ericsson seeks to take a bite out of the Apple market with its high end consumers by providing a device that is specifically tailored for gaming. The Xperia will have a set of controls that can be slid back into the device when not being used for playing. It will also have Wi-Fi capabilities, and can connect to the internet via 3G networks, according to the Wall Street Journal.
