Playstation2 is Still Hot After 11 Years

Even though it’s been on the market for over eleven years, Playstation 2 is still the best-selling video game console of all time, selling a total of 151.12 million consoles.

The game division at Sony announced record profits of $564 million for in the first three quarters of 2010, with a sale of 6 million consoles for the Playstation 2 and 14.2 million games, according to digitaltrends. 2.1 million Units were sold between October and December alone. The console sells for a bargain ($99 for brand new) and less for used systems, and new games are still coming out. Sony continues to manufacture consoles and games and is predicting high sales for the rest of the fiscal year.

Playstation 2 continues to find an audience even with the advent of PlayStation 3, which has been out for five years now. It even outsells PlayStation’s portable hand Helds, according to Tech Watch. The reason for this continued success, according to this website is that Playstation 2 still has good quality graphics, and also the its game library is “enormous, possibly even the largest game library to date.”

As a comparison, the Nintendo DS is almost going to hit the 145 million mark, but will likely continue to slow as the Nintendo 3DS continues to expand. The Game Boy and Game Boy Color together sold nearly 119 million units, the Playstation 1 sold 102.5 million, and the Wii has sold 84.64 million consoles to date according to digitaltrends.

The six million units of Playstation 2 consoles sold this year are the same as 2009. They will also be only two million lower than the eight million PSPs sold during the same fiscal year according to the numbers in the report released by Sony. For a console that was supposed to “die” with the “birth” of the Playstation 3, that’s an incredible achievement
