Mass Effect 2 Wins Best Game at BAFTA Awards

Mass Effect 2 won the award for the best video game yesterday at the UK’s BAFTA Awards, while Heavy Rain took home the top prizes for three categories.

Mass Effect 2’s win yesterday follows last month’s game of the year win at the Interactive Achievement Awards held in Los Vegas, which saw the game take home awards for best role playing and best story video game, says Gamasutra.

The murder mystery, Heavy Rain by Quantum Dream, which tells the story of four characters caught up in the case of the Origami killer, picked up the most awards and won the categories for best story, original music and technical innovation at the London ceremony, reports BBC News.

Brotherhood: Assassin’s Creed, which was the most nominated game with seven award nods, only took home one award for best action game, while Call of Duty: Black Ops, which was recently named the best-selling game of all time by NPD Group, won the GAME award, chosen by over 110,000 fans in an online vote. This is the third year in a row that the Call of Duty Franchise is chosen by fans for the BAFTA GAME award.  Super Mario Galaxy picked up the BAFTA for best gameplay, reports TechWatch.

The family award category was handed to Kinect Sports which uses the player’s body to play with the Kinect controller; recently named the fastest-selling gadget of all time, selling 10 million units in four months.

MyEmpire, the Grecian building game won the award for new category, best social network game, while Cut the Rope, a puzzle game took home the top honor for the handheld category, reports the Daily Mail.

As for the BAFTA fellowship award, it went to Peter Molyneux, for being what BAFTA CEO, Amanda Berry called, “one of the leading figures in the development of video games as an art form and an inspiration to the next generation of creative minds,” according to Gamasutra.  He is responsible for creating games such as Theme Park, Fable and Magic Carpet.
