Arcade Fire Wins Album of the Year at Grammys

With only 486,000 copies under their belt, nobody expected Arcade Fire to take home the ultimate ‘album of the year’ award for ‘The Suburbs’ trampling along the way Platinum-winning artists such as Eminem, Katy Perry, and Lady Antebellum, according to the LA Times. This was just one of many of the night’s surprises.

With Bieber-mania hitting fever pitch, everyone expected the Ontario native to take home ‘new artist’ award; but Esperanza Spalding won instead beating out Florence+ the machine, Drake and Mumford &Sons.  The other biggest winner of the night was country band trio Lady Antebellum, who took home a total of five awards, including song and record of the year for ‘Need you now.’ They also took home the Grammy for ‘best country album,’ ‘Best country performance,’ and ‘best country song,’ according to AOL.

The flamboyant Lady Gaga arrived to the show in an egg, and took home three Grammys including Best Pop Vocal album for ‘The fame monster’ and ‘best female pop vocal performance.’ While the ‘best male pop vocal’ went to Bruno Mars for ‘Just the way you are.’

Eminem went into the Grammys as the most nominated artist with a total of 10 nominations and was predicted to take ‘album of the year’ award, but he had to settle for two Grammys for ‘best rap album,’ for Recovery and ‘best solo rap performance,’ according to Fox News. Rihanna who was set to win with Eminem ‘record of the year’ for ‘Love the way you lie’ instead took home the top honor for ‘best dance song’ for her hit ‘Only girl in the world.’

The Grammys are less well known for their awards than for their outrageous performances that included Sunday night Justin Bieber singing alongside Jayden Smith. Rihanna performed twice, once with Eminem and the other with newcomer Drake. There was a tribute to Aretha Franklin that included Christina Aguilera. According to Fox News, the showstopper, however, was Cee Lo Green who sang alongside Gwyneth Paltrow and Jim Henson Co. Puppets and gave a “hilarious” performance of ‘Forget you not’, and clearly “out-Gaga’d” Lady Gaga.  Keep up to date on the 53Rd Grammy Winners here.
