Diane Lane to Play Superman’s Mom

Diane Lane will be playing Clark Kent’s adoptive mother in the upcoming remake of the film “Superman,” reports TV Guide.

Lane, 46, is younger than Eva Marie Sent who played in 2006 “Man of Steel” film, and will play alongside 27-year-old British actor, Henry Cavill who was chosen to play Clark Kent/Superman in the movie set for release in December 2012, reports Reuters.

The film director, Zack Snyder, who also directed “300” and upcoming “Sucker Punch,” was very happy with the casting choice, saying “This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman,” “We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination,” he added in a press release.

Lane will play Martha Kent who along with her husband Jonathan adopts the infant who was sent from dying planet Krypton to earth, according to the Examiner. The role of the father has yet to be revealed, but names such as Kevin Costner and Viggo Mortensen have been circulating. Producer Christopher Nolan, who is one of the producers to work with Zack Snyder on the remake, is notorious for being stingy and secretive with information on films he is working on.

Diane Lane was nominated for an Oscar in 2002 for “Unfaithful.” More recently, she can be seen in “Secretariat” and will soon star in HBO’s “Cinema Verite” with Tim Robbins, and James Galdofini.  Other movies she has starred in include, “Must love dogs”, ”Nights in Rodanthe”,”Under the Tuscan Sun”, ”Perfect Storm”, and “A Little Romance.”
