‘Mad Men’ Season 5 Delayed Until 2012

Thanks to a slew of advertising disputes and a quarrel with creator, Mathew Weiner, AMC’s hit series ‘Mad Men’ won’t be back for a fifth season until 2012.

“AMC has officially authorized production of Season 5 of Mad Men, triggering our option with Lionsgate,” the network said in a statement, reports USA Today. “While we are getting a later start than in years past due to ongoing, key non-cast negotiations, Mad Men will be back for a fifth season in early 2012.”

According to the New York Times, the three-time Emmy Award winning drama is being delayed because of an ongoing dispute with Weiner. He is reportedly hesitant to accept the network’s offer of $30 million for three seasons, because he is being asked to make several changes to the show that he doesn’t agree with. AMC and Lionsgate want him to shorten the show to add more advertising, and they also want to streamline the budget by cutting out two regular cast members.

Weiner is known for taking his creative integrity seriously. “I don’t understand why, with all of the success of the show, they suddenly need to change it,” Weiner said in an interview, according to the NYT. He added, “All I want to do is continue to make my show, and make it in the way I want to, with the people I want to make it with.” He added that all “the cuts would make Mad Men ‘a different show’” according to the Telegraph.

In some good news for the show, ‘Mad Men’ was chosen by the Los Angeles Conservancy for its “media award” at its 30 th Annual Preservation Awards, for sparking “an explosion of interest in all things 1960s, including architecture, bolstering efforts to save greater L.A.’s rich, yet highly vulnerable, legacy of sixties resources,” said the organization according to the Hollywood Reporter.

  • You Marketing people please Stop being greedy and let the creator of this great show get on with making the show in his own way. We love it how it is. Please don’t spoil it by changing the format that is so successful. When you’re on a good thing stay with it. That is not the time to start changing everything. Leave it be. If any of you marketing gurus were worth your salt you would try a different approach with your advertising instead of putting in more brain dead ads have more respect for the consumer and put in less but better ads. Know your audience… we are highly intelligent… treat us as such. And stop being greedy changing Mad Men will spoil it and you won’t have a show to advertise in the audience will drop off and you’ll have a lame duck. Good luck advertising with that.
