Microsoft Kinect Breaks Record with 10 Million in Sales

Microsoft announced on Wednesday that it sold over 10 million units of the Xbox Kinect motion-sensing device worldwide since its launch last November.

This number propelled the Microsoft Kinect to break a Guinness world record for the fastest-selling, consumer electronics product in its first 60 days, when it sold an average of 133,333 units a day, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. The company also sold over 10 million Kinect games.

The Microsoft Kinect controller costs $149.99 and uses body motions to play games instead of using hand-held controllers. Gamers can also get the Kinect bundled with the Xbox 360 console for $299.99 or $399.99, depending on storage needs.

Since launching it, the Kinect defied all expectations, including company goals. Microsoft initially forecasted that it would sell 3 million units by Christmas when it was first launched, then increased the number to 5 million units, reports the New York Times.  Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced in January that the Kinect had sold over 8 million devices by the end of the year, reports Cnet.

The record $1.5 billion in sales generated by the Kinect put the company back in the game, even outdoing rival Sony’s Playstation Move device which also uses the body movement to play.  Analysts say that the Move sold 3 million units in 2010. Analyst, Michael Pachter says that the Playstation Move “has not generated significant sales,” and it could have something to do with the Kinect. He added that the Wii and Playstation will face a lot of competition from the Xbox 360 this year, and expects, “demand for the Xbox 360 to remain stronger than the other consoles due to the popularity of Kinect.”

The Microsoft Kinect has not only been popular among gamers. Many hackers and researchers are also using the wireless controller to control remote computers, vacuums and other devices, states the New York Times.
