Office 2010 Sales Lead To Record Quarter For Microsoft

Microsoft experienced record revenues last quarter thanks in large part to the surging sales of Office 2010 to both consumers and businesses. The corporation brought in $19.85 billion, a record for the October-December quarter.

“Office 2010 is the most successful consumer version we have ever shipped, and the product is also performing extremely well in the business segment,” said Peter Klein, chief financial officer for Microsoft, during a call with Wall Street analysts, reports Computerworld.

The Business Division which Office 2010 belongs to brought in 35 percent of revenues for Microsoft during the final quarter of 2010. By comparison Microsoft Windows brought in 25 percent. Last year, it was the reverse. Windows, thanks to the popularity of Windows 7 had brought in 38 percent of the revenues and boosted computer sales, whereas the Business branch had provided for 26 percent, reported Computerworld.

Some analysts think that the reason Office 2010 is very successful is because of business upgrades that small and medium sized business used Office 2010 for.  Many companies put off upgrading their technology during the tough economic times are now more than ready to move forward, and get in on some new software.

According to Microsoft general manger for investor relations, Bill Koefoed, “Office 2010 is the fastest-selling consumer version of Office in history, with license sales over 50 percent ahead of 2007 for the equivalent period following launch.”

The record quarter for Microsoft is also due to the success of Kinect, the motion sensing controller for Xbox 360. The strong holiday sales for Kinect and Xbox games buoyed the Entertainment division of Microsoft and produced a 55 percent growth according to The Street.
