Disney Buys Social Network for Kids Togetherville

Disney has acquired the children’s social network; Togetherville for an undisclosed sum in a bid to move from traditional console games, to the more profitable online and mobile gaming industry.

Togetherville is described as the “safe social network for kids” and is aimed specifically at elementary school children between the ages of 6 and 10. The online network allows them to contact other children whose parents are on Facebook, and lets them send messages and comments which have pre approved, reports the Huffington Post. Although it requires Facebook to verify a parent’s identity, the website, says “your child never enters Facebook. They cannot see anything on your wall, anyone else’s wall, or any other part of Facebook. You’ll build your child’s neighborhood by choosing among your Facebook friends and their kids.” Also every new friend a child has must be approved by the parent.

Togetherville’s virtual neighborhood also allows kids to create profiles, throw snowballs at each other, give each other gifts and play various games. Parents can also participate in ‘Togetherville’ dishing out virtual allowances and posting messages, according to Yahoo News.

“Togetherville is very focused on trying to really reflect what the adult community has been doing on the Web and build a real online experience that adults enjoy for kids, but do it in a safe, COPPA-compliant way,” said founder and Chief Executive Mandeep S. Dhillon to the LA Times. COPPA is Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. Dhillon was excited about the Disney acquisition, saying, “they’re one of the most amazing family brands on Earth.”

The move by Disney to buy ‘Togetherville’ comes after it faced a $234 million loss in the last fiscal year. It’s trying to turn around its gaming division, Disney Interactive, by focusing more on social and mobile games, reports the Huffington Post. The company also acquired Playdom last July for $563 Million, says the LA Times.
