‘We Dare’ Video Game Stirring Up Trouble

A new flirty video game that encourages players to kiss, strip, and spank each other is creating a lot of controversy around the globe, leading to its ban in the United States.

The video game is set to be released for the Nintendo Wii and Playstation 3. More than the game itself, the video game trailer of ‘We Dare’ released last week has parents outraged. The ad campaign features adult couples, lying on top of each other and playing the game in other suggestive positions. The ad has been banned in the United States and many other non-European regions. The game itself seems innocent enough, featuring Mii-like characters and colorful, ‘non-explicit’ environments, reports IGN.

The reason the game is creating such anger with parents is that although it is obviously targeted towards adults, it has so far been approved for sale in Europe with a “Teen” rating, and Australia with just a “parental guidance” rating, even after Ubisoft suggested it be rated M for Mature.  A “parental guidance” rating means that players of all ages can buy the game. Currently some UK MPs are calling for its ban.

“The game is intended for an adult audience, absolutely,” a Ubisoft spokeswoman said. “Honestly, the game can also be played in a non-flirty way, it is just open for interpretation,” she added, according to the Herald Sun.

Although Ubisoft may be defending its game, and saying it is targeted towards adults, IGN argues that this kind of controversy is exactly what the company was aiming, and was probably “pleased” with the media interest. Even the title, “We Dare is begging for attention.”

Ubisoft has described the game as a “quirky, party game that offers a large variety of hilarious, innovative and physical, sometimes kinky, challenges,” reports the Huffington Post.
