Rihanna’s New Video Stirring Up Controversy

Rihanna’s most recent music video “S&M” from her latest album Loud is creating controversy. The video proves that the pop princess is not afraid of pushing the envelope and continuously reinvents herself to prove a point. It has already been banned in 11 countries according to NME.

The video features Rihanna as a ‘victim’ of the media stuck to the wall in a plastic wrap with them hitting her with arrows. The reference is to the way she thinks she was treated by the press. The media corps is all gagged and is furiously taking notes about Rihanna and sheds her in an unfavorable light. The video alternates between having her as dominated but also as the dominatrix when she is shown to punish the media by chaining them up and using her whip to take her revenge. She also has notorious celebrity paparazzi blogger Perez Hilton on a leash with her leading him around. However, she doles out punishment in “playful” ways compared to the way they treat her; she throws popcorn at them, kisses them and tickles Perez’s belly. According to MTV, it’s like she’s trying to kill the media with”kindness”.

Rihanna is obviously trying to make a point about the way she views the media and the way she thinks she has been unjustly targeted by it. In the colorful video, and using catchy music, Rihanna pushes the boundaries by simulating, being raunchy, and wearing skimpy outfits. She says in the song, “”Sticks and stones may break my bones…But chains and whips excite me.”  All this has led to MTV considering editing the video for daytime viewing according to NME.

This video follows a long line of videos that singers have done in the past to express their anger and take a stab at the mean-spirited media. One such video is Madonna’s “Human Nature.” Others are Britney Spears’s “Every time,” “Circus,” and Michael Jackson’s “Leave me Alone.”
