The First Annual ‘Comedy Awards Winners’ Announced

The first annual ‘Comedy Awards’ winners were announced yesterday by Comedy Central and the ceremony is planned to air on Sunday, April 10 at 9 p.m.

David Letterman, 63, host of the ‘David Letterman Show’ was awarded the most prestigious honor of the night, the ‘Johnny Carson Award for Comedic Excellence,’ during the New York ceremony. The award is set to be given annually in honor of the legendary comedian and talk show host to the comedian who portrays the comedic excellence of Johnny Carson, says the Awards Show news release.

‘Modern Family’ was chosen for both best comedy series and best directing, while the ‘Other Guys’ was chosen best comedy film. ’30 Rock’ got nods for best comedy writing and Alec Baldwin who plays Jack Donaghy on the hit NBC show, got the award for best comedy actor in TV. Kristy Wiig of ‘Saturday Night Live’ won best comedy actress in TV. Tina Fey of ‘Date Night’ and Zack Galifianakis of ‘Dinner for Schmucks’ picked up the awards for best comedy actress in film and best comedy actor in film respectively, says Comedy Central.

Eddie Murphy was awarded the ‘Comedy Icon’ award for his contribution to the world of comedy and Daniel Tosh was chosen by fans to get the breakthrough performer award. “Auto-Tune the News: Bed Intruder Song” was also elected by fans, as best viral original. Comedy Central favorites such as ‘The Late Night with Jon Stewart’ won best late night comedy series and ’South Park’ won for animated comedy series. Still in the animated world, ‘Toy Story 3’ won the award for best animated comedy film, and ‘Children’s Hospital’ got nods for best sketch/alternative comedy series.

The ‘Comedy Awards’ winners were chosen by a 1,000 invitation-only body composed of writers, producers, performers and directors, states the Awards Show news release.
