Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban proudly welcome a new baby girl into the fold, Faith Margaret Kidman Urban was born on December 28th through a surrogacy process that is has controversially included the term “gestational carrier.”  Kidman and Urban are the biological parents, and the “gestational carrier” underwent invitro-fertilization to be able to carry the baby for the couple.  Kidman and Urban have not shared the specifics as to health reasons that led them to go the surrogacy route, but it is known that Kidman has had her share of fertility problems in the past.

Both Nicole and Keith are clearly ecstatic over the birth of their daughter, which they announced on Monday, the day after the Golden Globe Awards.  The controversy stems from several angels, first, both Kidman and Urban have Australian citizenship, and paid surrogate births are illegal in Australia.  Secondly, many people are troubled with the use of the term “gestational carrier”, which many feel strips the surrogate mother of her dignity and humanity.  Australian news outlets were concerned about the possibility of Kidman and Urban having paid exorbitant amounts of money to the ”gestational carrier”, which would put them in violation of Australian law.

One Australian news commentator who was particularly upset by the phrasing of the couples’ announcement, referred to the use of “gestational carrier” term by stating “The objectification of women’s bodies and commodification of childbirth came together yesterday in a single antiseptic phrase…”
