Katy Perry Premieres Futuristic ‘E.T’ Video

After many teasers, Katy Perry premiered her “E.T” music video featuring Kanye West yesterday on MTV, as the single pushed its way to the number 1 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 singles, dethroning Lady Gaga’s “Born this Way,” reports Entertainment Weekly.

In a turn from her usual style, the video has Perry dressed in surreal, elaborate, alien-like outfits and donning reptile eyes. She told MTV, “Even teasing people with different images from ‘E.T.,’ people are so perplexed,” she laughed. “They’re like, ‘Katy Perry, you’re supposed to be Betty Boop! You’re supposed to be wearing pink!’ It’s exciting to be able to push my audience, to be like, ‘There’s always more, I’ve got all of this hidden up my sleeve that I’ve really longed to show people.’”

As for the song itself, she said that it was “harder” with a more “urban feel,” but that it had great sonics, and “there’s so much to it, there’s a lot in the song if you really put your headphones on and sink into the song.”

Perry also told MTV that the song “E.T” was initially intended for Three 6 Mafia, “I heard it and I always knew I wanted to write this futuristic, alienistic song, and they pulled it up and I was like, ‘wait, I can wrap my head around this. I know this seems like a long shot, but I think I have the perfect material to put on top of this sound.’ And I did, and it really worked out perfectly.”

According to Perry, the complex makeup looks in the music video took five to six hours to create and it was really hard to stay patient through the process. The sci-fi video was directed by Floria Sigismondi who also directed ‘The Runaways’ reports Slate. In it, Perry sings about a “supernatural extraterrestrial” as she incarnates an alien falling out of space to another planet where she meets a robot who transforms into a handsome man when she kisses him.
