‘Black Swan’ Film Drives Sales of Ballet Items

The film ‘Black Swan’ starring Oscar-nominated actress Natalie Portman has earned $101.5 Million in earnings since its opening 12 weeks ago, reports the Hollywood Reporter. It seems that the ballet film isn’t just raking in cash for the movie industry, but is also inspiring more people to buy ballet products.

The New York Post reports that since the movie’s release back in December, many shops that sell ballet articles have seen their sales boom. Ronnie Marshall, a manager for a dance store ‘On Stage Dancewear’ says that he has seen a spike in interest for legwarmers and leotards, and customers are specifically trying to get the ‘Black Swan’ look.

“Some have bought black tutus for street wear or a costume, and some ladies have come in looking for outfits to wear to Oscar parties,” says Marshall, who says there’s been a 20 percent increase in sales of black tutus.

Other stores such as “Chic Upper East Side” have seen a 30 percent increase in sales of the ballet flat shoe, and the manager says, “We’re getting strong influences from the movie.” Francisco Chateaubriand also saw an increase in sales, “Anything that gives ballet more exposure is obviously good for us and the dance industry in general,” he says, “And ‘Black Swan’ promotes dance as an art form.”

The film, which follows a dancer’s spiral into mental illness as she deals with competition to get the coveted black swan role, is up for five Oscars, including Best Picture.

“As much as it was about ballet, we were also trying to honor a genre, because we were making a horror-like thriller,” the movie’s cinematographer, Mathew Libatique, told the New York Daily News. “I also wanted to create a very feminine atmosphere…And we gave the movie’s palette a feminine feel, using white, magenta pink, soft greens, those kinds of colors,” he added.

Meanwhile, six of the Tutus that Natalie Portman wore in the film are on display in “Rodarte: States of Matter,” a new exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art, reports the Associated Press.
