Nokia and Apple Still Neck in Neck in Patent Fight

Nokia has filed a new set of complaints against Apple with the US International Trade Commission for another seven patent infringements.

Nokia claims that the Apple iPhone is using its technology “to create key features in its products in the areas of multitasking operating systems, data synchronization, positioning, call quality, and the use of Bluetooth accessories,’’ especially for the iPhone and other Apple products, reports the Boston Herald.

Nokia has been in litigation with Apple since October 2009 for 10 patents it claims it infringed, related to GSM, LAN standards and UMTS. Apple countersued in December of the same year stating that Nokia violated 13 of its patents. Soon after, Nokia took Apple infringements claims to the District Court of The Hague in the Netherlands, and the UK High Court in London, states PCmag.

“Our latest ITC filing means we now have 46 Nokia patents in suit against Apple, many filed more than 10 years before Apple made its first iPhone,” said Paul Melin, VP of intellectual property at Nokia, in a March 29 statement, relayed by Bloomberg. He also claimed that Apple violated Nokia patents in “virtually all products.”

On March 26, Apple won a ruling from an ITC judge saying that it didn’t violate 5 of the disputed patents claimed by Nokia, and that it would review the decision in 2 months. In another Apple case, HTC is being sued by the Cupertino, California-based company for patent infringement in its smartphones, reports Bloomberg. The hearing is scheduled to begin April 18 and the findings are expected to be released in August.

With the lucrative and ever expanding mobile phone market in the billions of dollars, patent disputes are becoming increasingly common. Recently Microsoft filed a suit against Barnes & Noble alleging that its eBook reader, the Nook, violated several of its patents. In another dispute the ITC ruled that Apple and RIM did not infringe Kodak patents in their smartphones, reports PCworld.
