HP Expects WebOS to take Over 100 million Devices a Year

In an industry meeting this week, HP’s new CEO announced that the WebOS was ready to take a bite out of the Google Android and Apple iOS market.

Leo Apotheker told investors that the WebOS, which it acquired from Palm, will take over 100 million devices a year between notebooks, mobile phones, tablets, laptops, PCs, and other devices.

“WebOS has the potential to become a very broad and very massive platform,” Apotheker said. He emphasized that WebOS would be put on all of its devices, including printers, reports Eweek.

Although 100 million might seem like a large number, “There is no doubt WebOS is a direct Android competitor (Apple as well). With it, HP wants to stake out its own ecosystem and rival the complete environments created by the others (think WebOS App Store, iTunes equivalent),” industry analyst Jack Gold told Eweek.

Apotheker also said that the WebOS will be available for PCs by the end of the year using a beta version, rather than a full-fledged operating system. He added that the WebOS worked impeccably with Windows, and wouldn’t pose a problem to PC users, reports TechNewsDaily.

Some argue that HP may not replace Apple’s young and “cool” devices, but it doesn’t need to. It just has to capitalize on its usefulness in corporate environments, says InformationWeek.

Similarly, PCmag’s Samara Lynn says, “As popular as Android and Apple devices are, there are still legitimate concerns in corporate IT about introducing these devices onto a business network.”

As for HP’s first tablet, the Touchpad, it will be available in June, according to Apotheker. “The TouchPad will come out in June and from that date onwards there will be wave after wave of technology coming out to support the WebOS platform,” he said according to TechNewsDaily. The Touchpad is said to cost $699.
