Adobe Releases Flash-to-HTML Converter Wallaby

Adobe has ceded to pressure to support HTML 5 and released Wallaby, a tool which allows for Flash-to-HTML conversion.

Apple has not made it a secret that it dislikes Adobe’s Flash technology because it uses a lot of battery and isn’t supported on its iOS platform. It has been encouraging Adobe to go HTML 5 for a while now. With Wallaby, files can be converted to HTML 5 form so that they can run on Apple devices such as the iPad and iPhone, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. The files in HTML5 code can then be edited using any text editor or authoring tool such as Dreamweaver. Last year, Adobe through CTO, Kevin Lynch, criticized Apple’s refusal to support Flash as anti-competitive behavior, but promised to author content in HTML 5.

Wallaby can be used by Windows and Mac users, and converts files not only into HTML5, but also JavaScript and CSS. “HTML5 will be an important technology for banner ads and Web publishing,” said Adobe Flash Professional Senior Product Manager Tom Barclay. However, he warned that developers are still likely to continue using Flash technology, especially for interactive games, reports Cnet.

The release of the converter tool is an important step; however, it’s still rough and in experimental stages. It doesn’t always convert all the elements of a file, especially audio and video tags. According to Barclay, Adobe Systems will solicit feedback from developers before it decides to take on more complicated features of HTML5, adds Cnet. “Developers can add interactivity after the conversion using JQuery and JavaScript,” he said.

HTML 5 has also been lauded by the like of  Facebook, Google, and Microsoft even if they all support different Web technologies, and is likely to replace Flash as the main way to create interactive Web apps in the next few years, reports the San Francisco Chronicle.
