THQ Announces ‘Kung Fu Panda 2’ Video Game Release

A Kung Fu Panda 2 video game by THQ will be released two days before the upcoming 3D film ‘King Fu Panda 2’ hits theaters on May 26.

The video game continues the story where the movie leaves it off, as Po and the Furious Five: Tigress, Monkey, Crane, Viper and Mantis go out to save Kung Fu from another evil enemy. “Kung Fu Panda 2 brings enormous innovation and creativity to build on the excitement of the movie,” said Mary Beth Haggerty, THQ’s VP of Product Development, Kids, Family and Casual Games in a press release.

The game, co-created by THQ and DreamWorks Animation will be available for the Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, and will allow players to use the consoles’ controllers such as the Kinect and the stylus to learn Kung Fu moves and fight in battles against new enemies.

“We layer in some amazing advances in technology like Microsoft’s Kinect for Xbox 360 that will allow players for the first time to not just play as a character, but to literally become the character,” said David White, senior producer at THQ to the Hollywood Reporter. “When you do kung fu moves, Po does what you’re doing, which means you are him as you play the game.”

Many game developers such as THQ make translating Hollywood big screen movies into video games a big part of their business. In addition to Kung Fu Panda 2, THQ recently partnered up with Blue Sky Studios to unveil Rio the video game in conjunction with the movie release.

“Advances in game technology are allowing us to deliver games that mirror the look of a Hollywood CG film,” added White to the HR. “We can take the detailed models and animation samples and adapt the characters for each video game system. The studios are really willing to share their CGI assets as well as concepts and designs from the film, and they are invaluable to making better and better games.”
