Spyro is Revived by Activision as Guitar Hero Dies

Activision is renewing with the past. It announced yesterday the return of the beloved purple dragon from the kids’ video game, Spyro.

After declaring last week the death of Guitar Hero, Activision has decided to breathe some life back into Spyro. Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure is due out in the fall for PCs, handhelds, and consoles, and will target kids ages 6-12, according to USA Today. The game will combine the world of real toys and video games.

There will be 31 characters present both in the video game and in real life. Gamespot announces that the game will be available as a $70 starter pack that will feature the game, toys, trading cards and a portal. Players can place their toys on the plastic portal and watch them on screen, and they can control the toys and even see them move.

“These are toys with brains,” says Activision CEO, Eric Hirshberg. The combination of real life toys and video game brings together “the imagination that toys have always unleashed with kids, and the imaginary world of a video game…It’s got a whole universe of characters and an incredible back story and a number of different ways to interact with it,” he added. Activision will reveal the game and the toys today in New York for next week’s annual Toy Fair, according to USA Today.

Activision is partnering up with Toys R US for this innovative toy adventure according to BreakingGobalNews. The toys will have a chip built into them and they will be able hold onto information, progress and achievements.  The toys themselves were designed with the help of Shrek’s character designer and the storyline was inspired by the writers of Toy Story 1. Players are invited to watch the trailer of the upcoming Skylanders on the game’s official website.
