Gameloft Looking to Expand through Amazon Appstore

French video game publisher, Gameloft, announced that it would seek growth from games played on television without consoles and from the newly-launched Amazon Appstore.

Gameloft Chief Executive, Michel Guillemot said that being the world’s largest retailer, people are comfortable using their credit cards on Amazon, and thus provides the perfect platform for mobile games, according to Reuters.

“The Amazon ecosystem is controlled where we don’t find too many pirated version of our games or malware games, so for the consumers, it will be a safer place to come and get applications,” Guillemot said in the interview.

Gameloft which was founded in 2000 is one of the only publicly traded companies that makes most of its profit from the fast growing mobile game sector, one of the few bright spots in the flailing global video game market. It already offers games such as ‘Dungeon Hunter’ and ‘Let’s Golf’ in Apple’s App Store, and as of February made a reported $141 million in revenue, thanks in large part to apps sold through Apple, according to Gamasutra.

The Amazon Appstore was launched this week and offers over 3,800 apps to date, with over 400 free. To lure customers, the Appstore also features two perks, a “test drive”  that allows customers to try out an app on a simulated smartphone before buying it, and a “freemium” app of the day that is a premium app priced offered for free.

For example, all day Today, Amazon is offering the song identification app ‘Shazam Encore’, which normally costs $4.99 for free, says Phandroid.

The Appstore which is in direct competition with the Google Android market, also irked Apple with its name because it said that it would “confuse and mislead customers,” says Apple according to Discover Magazine, but Amazon insists it’s different because it’s written in lowercase and all in one word.
