‘Angry Birds Rio’ to Arrive March 22

‘Angry Birds’ creator Rovio announced at the Game Developers’ Conference, that animated film ‘Angry Birds Rio’ will be released on March 22 and a new game release was imminent.

Rovio’s CEO, Peter Vesterbacka, said that a new ‘Angry Birds’ edition would be “very green” in honor of St. Patrick’s Day with more of these, pointing at a green plush pig, reports PCmag. The company previously added levels for Valentine’s Day, Christmas, and Halloween. He also announced that an “Angry Birds Rio” game will be released on the same day as the film, March 22.

This “Angry Birds” product frenzy is indicative of the rapid ascent of the Iphone game where players can sling cartoonish birds at pigs that have stolen their eggs. It has sold more than 12 million copies since December 2009, has been downloaded over 50 million times and is the best Iphone App of all time, reports the San Francisco Chronicle.  It has also helped to put Finnish studio, Rovio on the map. With 52 games already released by the company, Vesterbacka has big plans for Rovio, and Angry Birds is just the beginning. The game has already topped downloads in more than 70 countries in the past year, “Angry Birds to us is more than a game,” Vesterbacka said at a panel in the conference yesterday, reports the Wall Street Journal.

The San Francisco Chronicle agrees and says “Angry Birds is officially part of pop culture,” and states that the Rovio has sold over 2 million plush Angry Birds toys. The company also plans to expand to other platforms, and plans to hit gaming consoles after making its way into Nokia, Android, Wave OS, PC and Mac, according to the Wall Street Journal..

Rovio has also made a lot of money from advertising, and from “add-ons.” Over 40 percent of Angry Birds players purchased the $0.99 “angry eagle” which allows a player to skip over a level that he or she is stuck in by unleashing a power up bird, adds Cnet.
