Last October was a whirlwind time for Oprah Winfrey, who learned that she had a half sister whom she never knew about.  Oprah was 9 years old and living with her father when her mother became pregnant with her half sister Patricia.  Due to difficult financial circumstances, Patricia spent many years being moved to multiple foster homes, and was finally adopted at age seven.  Winfrey’s mother had never shared the information with her, and the news “shook me to my core” stated Winfrey.  She also called the news one of “the greatest surprises” of her life.

On Monday, Oprah Winfrey tearfully introduced her half sister to the world on her show, where Patricia was able to share information about her difficult childhood, and the family who raised her.  She and her family have known that she was related to Winfrey since 2007, and chose to keep the family secret to themselves.  Oprah Winfrey was very moved that the family never even thought to cash in on the news, sell the story, or exploit Winfrey’s fame and wealth in any way.

Based on the tearful meeting and the big heart that Winfrey has become famous for, I’m sure these sisters are going to share a lot of love, and spend a lot of time catching up on lost time.  If there is one thing that Oprah has become known for, its her capacity to love and demonstrate compassion, and Patricia is lucky indeed to have a new friend and sister in Oprah.
