Nelly Furtado to Donate Qaddafi Money to Charity

International superstar, Nelly Furtado has decided to donate money that was given to her to sing at a party, by Libya’s embattled Qaddafi clan.

Furtado admitted on her official Twitter account, that members of the Qaddafi family gave her $1 million to sing  at a show in Italy, “In 2007, I received 1million$ from the Qaddafi clan to perform a 45 min. show for guests at a hotel in Italy…I am going to donate the $.” According to Fox News, Furtado joins a long list of entertainers that the Qaddafi family has paid to perform at parties that includes Mariah Carey and Usher.

CNN reports that at least five entertainers have been identified as having performed for the Qaddafi family wither by the artists’ own admission or through Wiki Leaks cables. In 2009, Usher and Beyonce were reported to have been invited to sing at a new year’s bash in the Caribbean island, St. Barts, thrown by Moammer Qaddafi’s son, Mutassim.  The same son also paid a $1 million a year before that to hear Mariah Carey sing four songs.

Rolling Stone Magazine reports that many in the music industry are calling on other artists to donate funds received by the Qaddafi family after the recent Libya incidents. David T Viecelli, a prominent booking agent for Arcade Fire and other groups, tells The Guardian,, “People put a big paycheck on the table, and people don’t consider where the money is coming from, or what they’re at least passively endorsing”, “If it’s true that Muammar Qaddafi’s son says, ‘I’ve got $50m, come and play for my buddies’, I really think you have to say no to that. Given what we know about Qaddafi and what his rule has been about, you have to willfully turn a blind eye in order to accept that money,” he added.
