Anderson Cooper’s Egypt Attack Inspires Jokes on TV

CNN’s Anderson Cooper was attacked by pro-Mubarak supporters on Thursday, apparently “hit on the head,” repeatedly according to Cooper himself while speaking on American Morning. This caused him to stop broadcasting live from Tahrir (Liberation) square and moving to an “undisclosed location.”

In a video broadcast during his show, Anderson Cooper 360, he said, “I can’t tell you where we are, frankly for our own safety.” He added, “Systematically, we have seen journalists attacked…we would like to be showing you instead of…this strange image of us sitting on the floor of an undisclosed lighting in dim lighting, we would like to be showing you pictures, live pictures, of what’s happening in Liberation Square right now, but we can’t do that because our cameras have systematically been taken down through threats, through intimidation, through actual physical attacks.”

He continued by saying, “I don’t mind telling you I am a little bit scared, because we frankly don’t really know what the next few hours will hold. And I think there’s a lot of people who are scared tonight in Egypt.”

Although the attack was unfortunate, this didn’t stop late night shows from taking full advantage of the situation.

Conan O’Brian said,”While in Egypt, CNN’s Anderson Cooper was attacked and beaten, which raises two questions. Is it safe to send our media into these places? And how do we get Glenn Beck over there?”

On his late night show, Jimmy Kimmel said, “Apparently something is going on over in Egypt. Anderson Cooper and his crew got attacked by pro-government forces. He got hit in the head about ten times, and I think he got kicked in the Mini Cooper too.”

While Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart said,”Alright, Hosni (Mubarak) now you have gone too far.  Hands off Anderson Cooper. There’s not to be a silvery wisp out of place on that man’s head, on that man’s glorious head.”

The jokes are disheartening to some, hilarious to others, but the fact is, Anderson Cooper 360 ‘s Egypt coverage got the highest ratings of any news show on networks including Fox News and MSNBC, pulling in 540,000 viewers, according to Perez Hilton, and that is no laughing matter.
