Sprint Announces the World’s First Dual Screen Smartphone

In an industry first, mobile phone manufacturer Kyocera unveiled yesterday the Kyocera Echo for Sprint. It will be the World’s only smartphone with two screens, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The phone has two 3.5 inch touch screens that users can put side by side and use for different applications or can be put one on top of the other for a more conventional touchscreen experience. This allows consumers to multitask while being able to drag from one screen to another. The smartphone, which will run on Android operating system, will be launched in the spring for Sprint.

“Until now, a single screen on a smartphone could only be used to complete one task at a time, even with limited multitasking capabilities available on some smartphones…Kyocera Echo’s second screen provides the ability to do two things at the same time and get more done – send an email on one screen while surfing the web on the other, watch a video on one screen while texting on the other, comparison shop online with one web site on each screen and so much more.” Sprint and Kyocera announced in a press release, according to the Daily Tech.

On its website, Sprint has already launched a campaign, challenging customers with a picture of the striking dual screen phone “Are you ready for a dual?” It asks.  The phone will cost $199 after a $100 mail in rebate with a two year contract. The phone can work on different modes, including a tablet mode, an optimized mode, a simul-task mode, and a single screen mode, according to Sprint. Some of the phone’s other specs are; a 5 mega-pixel rear facing camera, an 8Gb microSD card, 1GB board memory and mobile Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities according to the Examiner.
