Obama Meets With Jobs and Other Industry Leaders

President Obama dined with technology industry leaders, such as Apple CEO Steve Jobs, Intel Chief Executive Paul Otellini, Yahoo! CEO Carol Bartz, and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, yesterday, while on a two-day tour of California and Oregon.

He met with the industry leaders in the San Francisco Bay area to promote technological innovation as a way to boost growth. With this trip, President Obama plans to push his innovation and education agenda. He is asking for increased education spending from Congress because he thinks that a more educated workforce will help the US compete with the rest of the world, reports Businessweek.

Today, President Obama will tour the Intel facility that is based in Hillsboro, Oregon, and Bloomberg reports that he will name Intel’s Paul Otellini to a Presidential Council on jobs and competitiveness. This panel, announced in January is set to replace the one headed by Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker that was put into place in 2009 to respond to the US economic and financial crisis, according to Reuters. President Obama already named General Electric’s Jeffrey Immelt to the new Panel’s Chairmanship last month.

The meeting with technology industry leaders came amidst rumors of Steve Jobs’ deteriorating health. The tabloid, The National Inquirer released unconfirmed pictures of Steve Jobs looking very thin and visiting the Stanford Cancer Center in Palo Alto, the same center that Patrick Swayze visited during his battle with pancreatic cancer. The tabloid also revealed that according to medical sources, Jobs had only six weeks to live. These are just rumors, and nothing is confirmed, and given the nature of the tabloid, little credibility should be given to this information. Just last week, there were confirmed reports that Jobs was working on a smaller, cheaper Iphone and that he was still very much involved in the daily operations at the company.
