LG Eyes Major Comeback in 2011

LG is planning a comeback this year. It has unveiled the world’s first 3D phone and plans to ship 150 million phones in 2011.

LG has not been faring well lately, its global smartphone market share dropped to the single digits last year at 8.4 percent and only shipped 116.7 phones instead of its projected 140 million handhelds, according to PC World. It didn’t even bother showing up at the Mobile World Congress, a major telecom trade show, last year.

Well, things have changed. LG came back with force at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and revealed the world’s first 3D smart phone, called the Optimus 3D. The phone would allow users to watch 3D videos without using special glasses as well as use the phone’s double camera on the back of the phone to capture themselves using 3D technology, according to The Wall Street Journal. The phone has 2 5-megapixel cameras, and a 4.3 inch 3D screen, according to Techtree. The company also announced its partnership with YouTube that will allow LG users to easily upload 3D videos onto the popular video streaming site using the Optimus 3D.

The company also unveiled its first tablet, the Optimus Pad at the congress. It plans to ship 1 million tablet units this year alone. It also plans to ship 150 million phones, including 30 million smartphones which would be four times the amount of smartphones shipped last year, according to Forbes.

LG will keep using Google’s Android mobile platform and defended its decision to use Windows 7 Phone as its software, “Windows Phone 7 is small but growing, which means there is a market out there and a need for that type of operating system,” said LG’s mobile communications president and chief executive, Dr. Jong-Seok Park.
