ioSafe Rugged Portable Hard Drive Survives Shotgun Blasts

The majority of us have read a product test study sometime in our lives, and with fragile electronic devices, you rarely hear of them being submerged in water, dropped, or blasted with a shotgun.  The CES 2011 proved to be the exception during the debut of the ioSafe’s Rugged Portable hard drive.  The hard drive withstood the abusive testing, and did not loose any data.

“It has a full metal jacket and it is machined out of a solid billet of aluminum,” ioSafe CEO Robb Moore said.  The drive’s size ranges from 250GB to 1TB, and can be purchased starting at $150.  Any model purchased comes with one year of data recovery service, and additional years can be purchased for a very reasonable price.

Some of the spectacular protective features of the ioSafe Rugged Portable Hard Drive’s newest model:

  • Waterproof case that can protect data for up to 3 days in salt or fresh water at a depth of 10′ (30′ for the titanium SSD version)
  • The drive can withstand being dropped from 10 feet (20 feet for titanium model)
  • Can withstand gunshot blasts without loosing data

Moore had never claimed that the device could survive shotgun blasts, but thought the test would be a fun way to demonstrate the hard drive’s durability.  It is considered an impressive demonstration as all the data that Moore had pre-loaded onto the drive was still accessible after it was shot.  Moore did admit that had the hard drive taken a shot directly into its center, it would have been destroyed.

Following is a video of the shootout.
