The Weinstein Bros. Get into Video Games

After winning three Oscars, including best picture for the highly acclaimed ‘Kings Speech’ the Weinstein Bros. have decided to get into the video game industry.

Harvey and Bob Weinstein announced the creation of TWC Games and plan to use their company and Dimension Films’ many “strong and recognizable properties,” says Time. TWC will work with outside partners to create games that illustrate movies such as ‘Scream’, ‘Scary Movie’ and ‘Halloween’ reports the Wall Street Journal.

“The video game marketplace is changing at such a rapid rate. With all of the digital platforms, there are so many opportunities to broaden our audience with compelling, high quality, cost-efficient, video game entertainment,” said Bob Weinstein, co-chairman, said in a statement, according to Reuters.

He added that the main goal of the gaming unit was to market the company’s films, and not to make full fledged video games. “I have no desire to make an original videogame,” he said, explaining that the company’s investment was not very significant in the lower 6 figures. One of the first TWC initiatives will be an iPad app and downloadable games connected to the upcoming release of “Scream 4,” says the WSJ.

TWC Games has decided to partner up with video game production company, Beefy Media, to make its games. “The Weinstein Company is an incredible entertainment company, and I share their vision for creating very high quality content for the marketplace,” said Beefy Media President Adam Boyes to Reuters. “We plan to combine our extensive video game developer relationships with the impressive catalog of properties to create and produce content made by gamers for gamers,” he added.

The Weinstein Bros. own many rights to the films made under Miramax before it was sold to Disney and they intend to take full advantage of them to get into the lucrative social, mobile and console gaming world, reports the New York Post.
